I watched Steve for years on U.S. F1 coverage. This book is reflective of his ultra-cautious personality. Surrounded by some of F1's biggest personalities: Schumacher, Piquet, Flavio Briatore, Tom Walkinshaw, Jean Alesi, etc. he plays it safe and offers no personal insights or anecdotes about these people. Steve delves into the tiniest of practical details when it comes to things like springs and dampers which is snoozeworthy even for a fan watching F1 for 31 years. Steve shied away from anything controversial during his broadcasting career and continues to do so with this book.
Steve Matchett knows how to tell a great story, that's for sure. I've watched him for years as a Formula 1 commentator so I was very interested in reading this book. His prose style is wonderful and makes for very pleasurable reading, and the story itself is an excellent look into the path of a mechanic who started out working at dealerships in England and wound up as a top mechanic in a world championship winning F1 team.If you're a racing fan at all, this is a really entertaining read. I've since read a couple more of his books and they all measure up as very well-written.
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Matchett's book, the Mechanic's Tale. Anyone who is a regular fan of Formula 1 racing has surely daydreamed about a life and career working for a globe-trotting F1. Mr. Matchett takes you through his steps into and out of Formula 1 and gives you real insight into what life is like in an F1 team. I wouldn't say it removes the glamour, just details the real work to produce it. I would also recommend Mr. Matchett's other two books, Life in the Fast Lane and the Chariot Makers but this was my favorite of his.
Anyone interested in Formula 1 from the inside should read this and Steve’s other books. Not a dry description of activities, but an enjoyable, insightful narrative from his personal perspective. The inclusion of verses from some classic literature sprinkled in appropriate places adds to the enjoyment of reading this. His insights from the 1990’s elicit comparison to the current state of F1. Well done.
A great book for a F1 junky especially if you followed F1 in the 1990's. Steve writes well and expresses a degree of English humor. I attended a few of the races in the early 1990's and can remember some of the events that he discussed which even made it more interesting. One has to appreciate the mechanics even more after reading this book.
I really enjoyed this book.I've read a lot of books on F1, and as Matchett mentions in his book, most center around the drivers and the race action. There's very little very good material that allows one to explore what happens with the rest of the team, especially, the mechanics, those men taking care of the car.I found this book to be an excellent read. Matchett is a rounded individual and quite a well developed personality. These qualities empowered him to write with a very insightful point of view. With a point of view that successfully reaches the heart and minds of non-technical readers.I highly recommend this book for all those with a deep interest in the sport. I'll no longer be looking in the pit garage at the mechanics and the ongoing work around a pitstop in the same way. Much respect is due to the mechanics and the hard work they put into a successful F1 team.
This is the first book by Mr. Matchett that I have read. I will eventually buy his other books because I really appreciate his technical input during Formula One broadcasts. That said, this book has some interesting people stories, a couple of which were very very funny. It starts out good and then gets dullish. It's a quick and easy read.
One of the best books ive read so far, iit changed my view of Formula 1 and autosport. I know i wont be able to watch a race as before never agaoin. Ive never realized how much work has to be done in a garage and pit lane during race weekend, and what it takes to prepare a car for competition. It was very interesting to learn about people who make it happen. Great work!
