People need to breathe. Without oxygen, the human brain can suffer permanent brain damage in as little as 3 minutes. You have chosen to help people live by helping them breathe. This skill requires knowledge. This book is designed to teach you both. You will learn what you need to know to handle respiratory distress, which may or may not require intubation. Other skills, such as manually assisted ventilation and new technologies are also taught. I've personally taught hundreds of people to intubate. All my students started as I did, nervous, not knowing where to position their fingers or hold the laryngoscope blade, or what to look for. All knew that you hold someone's life in your hands when you intubate. All nevertheless, learned to manage the airway and to intubate. One thing I have learned as a teacher is that printed materials available to teach intubation are limited. Medical textbooks lack detailed information about intubation because, traditionally, intubation has been a skill passed from mentor to student. Today intubation is taught not only to medical students who have the advantage of one to one mentoring, but also to civilian and military emergency responders who often do not. Accordingly a different textbook was required. This book fills that need, as it is designed to teach anyone how to intubate. Anyone Can Intubate, my instructional videos, as well as my books in development, are designed for students, as well as their instructors, to help make the complicated easier to learn and master.
